The Earthquakes Jolt Turf Growth With Covermaster® Turf Covers

San Jose, CA - From seed stealing birds to superior turf, San Jose depends on EVERGREEN® turf growth blankets.

The San Jose Earthquakes, a Major League Soccer (MLS) team in the Western Conference, have been long time users of COVERMASTER® solutions. Since 2018, the club has relied on EVERGREEN® RADIANT as part of its stadium turf management program at their stadium.

In the fall of 2025, the Earthquakes constructed a brand-new practice field adjacent to the existing one at their Training Center outside the stadium. For this new surface, the team selected EVERGREEN® SPECTRUM, chosen specifically for its ability to work with natural sunlight and deliver optimal light for turf development.

EVERGREEN® SPECTRUM features a unique orange coating engineered to refract the sun’s penetrating rays into a light spectrum proven to accelerate turf growth and enhance overall plant health.

The new turf covers were delivered in December 2025 as the fresh sod was being laid, followed by overseeding. As the new MLS season gets underway, Greg Elliot, the Earthquakes’ new Head Groundskeeper, confirmed: “The EVERGREEN® turf covers allowed us to seed later and establish the Bermuda grass sod for an additional two weeks. While the seeding rate was light, the turf blankets helped us develop a superior training field compared to our existing surface.”

An added benefit when using EVERGREEN® turf blankets during seeding is that the covers also protect the seed from being eaten by birds, preventing unnecessary loss during turf establishment. Thanks in part to EVERGREEN® growth blankets, the training pitch is now in excellent condition for the 2026 season.
