Decades ago, it was an opportunity to supply a sports field tarp to protect the turf during a rock concert that shifted Covermaster into the sports surface protection business. This September, the industry leader is celebrating 50 years in the business with a continued focus on innovative solutions that will make life easier for their customers.
“How can we do it better? has always been the company’s driving force,” says Covermaster President Bob Curry. “Take Evergreen turf blankets, for example. Covering a baseball or football field used to be a job for half a dozen people. Thanks to the introduction of TarpMate air rollers, it can be done with just two to three people. That level of progress is just as evident in gym floor covers where power winders, storage racks for the gym floor cover, and brushes have completed the system’s evolution, all with ease of use in mind.
The original business goes back to 1969 when the lumber company Bob was working for struck up a partnership with a Finnish company interested in offering tarp rentals in Canada. He travelled to Finland to see their operations and launched the business that year. In 1981, Bob bought the company outright and continued the shift from rental tarps to sports surface covers. The company has seen substantial growth in its product lines and client base over the years. Today, Covermaster’s list of clients includes many NFL, MLB, MLS, NBA and NHL teams, along with their NCAA counterparts and an ever expanding list of European and international professional clubs.
The family business now spans three generations, serves customers worldwide, and continues a decades-long commitment to protecting both indoor and outdoor sports surfaces with products that are easier and less time-consuming to handle.
