FAR NORTH INNU COMMUNITY IN QUEBEC MAKES MULTI-USE ARENA SAFER
Schefferville, Quebec - Ice Arena Surface Covered by Custom-Fitted COVERMASTER® TERRACOVER ICE®.
The Innu Nation of Matimekush-Lac John is a First Nation based out of Schefferville in Quebec, Canada. Lac-John is just over a mile north of Schefferville and about a mile from the border with Labrador. The nation has a population of approximately 1,000 people in total. They largely speak Innu, an Algonquian language that is a member of the Cree–Montagnais–Naskapi dialect. Their community facilities include a community center, a radio station, a church, a gymnasium, a library, and yes, an ice arena.
To accommodate multi-use events in the ice arena without compromising the condition of the ice, the Innu Nation wanted a system that would be used on half of their ice arena surface while leaving the other half of the ice exposed. COVERMASTER® recommended TERRACOVER ICE®. This ice rink cover conversion system features a unique, patented design that provides the very best in thermal insulation. TERRACOVER ICE® arena flooring overlap and lock to eliminate gaps that would allow the cold through while preventing the ice from melting.
A total of 7,200 square feet of TERRACOVER ICE® panels were ordered along with five, stackable COVERMATE™ ICE CARTS for ease of handling, maximum safety, and minimal storage footprint. When it came time to ship this custom-fitted ice conversion system to Schefferville, the community was not connected to the highway network in Quebec. Instead, it was shipped by way of Tshiuetin Rail from Sept-îles on Québec's north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Trucks then brought the TERRACOVER ICE® from the railroad station to the arena where it will be well used for multi-use events of the Innu Nation.
