Vancouver, BC, Canada
- BC Place, home to both the BC Lions of the CFL and the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS, was used to stage the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic games. Immediately following the completion of the games, the air supported dome structure underwent a massive reconstruction, turning the fixed roof facility into a ultramodern, retractable roof multipurpose stadium. The result was a stunning success, with the result being a virtually brand new stadium.
Since 2005, the stadium has owned 40,000 sq. ft. of the Terracover turf protection system, used to protect the removable when a quick turnaround for a non-athletic event was required. For the newly renovated facility, they chose to install a permanent artificial turf system. While providing the world class surface that was required for the the professional teams that call BC Place home, line management of the stadium had to now find a world class turf protection system. They required a surface that would not only create a solid interlocking semi-permanent floor, but would also be able to adapt to the quickly changing climate conditions created in a retractable roof stadium.
To solve the problem for BC Place purchased 127,000 square feet of Terracover V. The Terracover V turf protection system was completely redesigned to meet the requirements of BC Place. An industry first two part camlock system was designed to give both lateral and horizontal stability, which will keep the panels locked together when driven over, even by trucks and forklifts. The twin sheet thermal molded panels provide industry leading strength and compression capabilities, while the 42 square foot panels reduce the number of tiles to be handled, resulting in quick installation and removal times. An integrated cable management system was built into the design, allowing for ultimate flexibility and safety, whether setting up for a concert or even a trade show. Terracover V comes complete with an integrated raised anti-slip pattern that provides both safety and an aesthetically pleasing surface.
With their new Terracover V System now in place, BC Place now has the solid temporary flooring that they required. Installed semi-permanently during the off-season, Terracover V will provide a hard surface that will allow BC Place to host any revenue generating event they wish, just as if they had removed their turf and were holding the event on their concrete floor.
