San Diego, CA - February marks the time when Petco Park in downtown San Diego, California gets a spring makeover. The old sod is stripped out and a fresh layer is laid down, quickly followed by one of the stadium’s newest investments — enough Evergreen® Radiant turf covers to blanket the entire field in preparation for the upcoming baseball season.
Home to the MLB’s San Diego Padres, Petco Park has decided to grow Bermuda grass year-round. Known as a hardy grass that thrives in hot temperatures, it doesn’t do as well when milder temperatures drop in the winter or in the evenings during the summer and fall months. That’s why turf blankets are so important. While many stadiums will overseed with rye grass when Bermuda grass goes dormant, the Petco Park groundskeeping team is staying with one species and needs to retain as much heat as possible.
Evergreen® growth covers will raise the soil temperature to help establish the new Bermuda grass early in the season, and then protect the turf if a sudden chill shows up in the forecast. About 108,000 square feet of turf growth blankets were delivered to Petco Park in January — enough to cover the entire field — along with five TarpMate™ Air Rollers that make installing, removing, and storing the turf covers easier than ever.
The Padres have relied on Covermaster® sports field covers for years, including full infield Raincovers, mound and plate covers, bullpen covers, Enkamat Flatback™ and on-deck circles. Evergreen® winter turf blankets are an important addition to the team’s groundskeeping toolbox.
