Lubbock, TX - You won’t see winter turf covers commonly used in Texas stadiums but when groundskeepers have given turf growth blankets a trial run, the results have been outstanding.
Last year, Texas Tech University in Lubbock decided to give Evergreen turf blankets a try. Already used successfully by the MLB’s Texas Rangers, the university ordered a 90-x90-foot section of Evergreen Premium to test over the winter months and were so impressed with the results that they purchased enough grow tarp to cover their softball field that spring.
Just over 34,000 square feet of Evergreen Original turf cover was ordered for the grass outfield at Rocky Johnson Field, and they invested in an additional 65,000 square feet of Evergreen Premium for one of the school’s football practice fields. Similar to many NFL teams, practices are alternated between the school’s natural and synthetic fields to prepare for the stadium surface at upcoming games.
The Evergreen turf cover is a renowned, patented product used worldwide to speed up seed germination and promote deep root development. By retaining natural heat and moisture, turf blankets promote earlier spring green-up and a longer growing season. Ideal for colder climates, a quality turf field cover will also protect against adverse growing conditions in warmer areas, including human and wildlife interference, seed dispersal and environmental damage.
Evergreen Original, used on Texas Tech’s softball field, is a budget-friendly option with good UV resistance and proven performance. The Premium growth blanket, utilized at the football practice facility, has set a standard for quality and longevity within the turf industry, protecting both new and established greens.
