Seattle, WA - When T-Mobile Park, home to the MLB’s Seattle Mariners, underwent a complete field renovation this spring, a new custom skin tarp helped to lessen the workload for the stadium’s grounds crew.
Head Groundskeeper Bob Christofferson contacted Covermaster about a new design for an infield tarp to protect the 95-foot radius arc from rain. Not only would the baseball infield tarp stop the dirt from being washed out, but it would also help to keep moisture in the dirt infield. The trick was to come up with a design that was extremely durable yet manageable in size for a smaller crew.
Instead of the usual two-piece polyethylene infield cover, he chose a five-piece vinyl infield tarp that could easily be installed or removed by just a couple of crew members. The custom design had five uniquely-sized sections that, when installed together, fit like a puzzle to cover the skinned infield.
The new green baseball infield cover arrived at the Seattle venue in February — in plenty of time for a rainier-than-expected March. The infield tarp will be on standby for ongoing maintenance throughout the year and will also help to prevent evaporation of moisture from the soil as part of a complete moisture management system.
