Washington, D.C. - The unusually cold temperatures stretching across North America this winter are among an increasing number of difficult-to-explain weather events. The climate is less predictable than ever, and that makes turf covers crucial for sports venues.
The RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. has always been a supporter of Evergreen turf blankets. In fact, they were Covermaster’s first Evergreen customer, dating back to the mid-1980s in the days when the stadium was home to the Washington Redskins. Major League Soccer’s D.C. United played at RFK from 1996 until last year, making it the longest-used stadium in the MLS. This year, D.C. United moves to their new home at Audi Field and will continue to use RFK’s outer practice fields for training.
It was no surprise that Events DC, owner of the long-standing venue, decided to invest in additional Evergreen turf covers. Washington is located in a climate transition zone and though the stadium’s Bermuda grass is a fast-growing and hardy turf, it still needs extra protection from cooler temperatures. What made their recent order unique was an exceptionally short turnaround time. Ordered on December 18, the customer needed delivery before year’s end. The new custom sized and manufactured Evergreen turf cover was shipped just two days later on December 20.
Turf growth blankets are used on sports fields worldwide, helping to speed up seed germination and promote deep root development. Renowned for their ability to retain natural heat and moisture, winter turf covers guard against wind, ice, snow and frost, and have been proven to encourage earlier spring green-ups.
