San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic - In sunny San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic, baseball prospects spend hours at the area’s Major League Baseball training facilities. MLB teams have practice fields throughout the DR and among them is the San Diego Padres.
The Padres Dominican Republic Baseball Park meets the same standards required by the MLB, and that extends to the maintenance of the park’s playing surfaces. Last summer, park staff contacted Covermaster in search of an infield tarp and spot covers to outfit the field. The spot covers would be used for ongoing maintenance; the baseball field tarp would help prevent rainouts and protect the surface from the intense Caribbean sun.
They chose Raincover Plus baseball field tarps, Covermaster’s best-selling heavy duty infield cover. Its exceptional heat reflective properties and UV resistance keep the turf drier and cooler. By opting for the wind weighted version of spot covers, the tarps are quick and easy to install. The baseball infield tarps were shipped out last August — ideal timing for the academy’s winter league.
The Dominican Republic is considered one of the top countries in the Caribbean for finding baseball prospects. Currently all 30 MLB clubs have academies in the DR with programs dating back as early as the 1980s.
