Saint Paul, MN - Planning and constructing a new soccer stadium is no easy feat but more than three years after the idea was proposed, Allianz Field, home to Minnesota United FC, finally opened on April 13 with the club’s first home game against New York City FC.
The Saint Paul, Minnesota facility seats about 19,400 with a future expansion of about 5,000 seats in the works. Designed with deliberate sightlines and an intimate atmosphere, the pitch is made up of 97,000 square feet of natural turf from a sod farm in Wisconsin. Keeping the surface in top condition is a priority for the stadium’s turf manager, a first-time customer who approached Covermaster in search of high-quality turf blankets.
They opted for Evergreen Spectrum turf covers with its orange lace coating designed to provide optimal sunlight for turf growth. An order for just over 84,000 square feet of turf growth blankets in five panels was delivered in early October, enough to cover the entire pitch. The orange coating transforms the sun’s rays into the optimal light spectrum for natural turf, accelerating the green-up effect, encouraging growth, and promoting deep roots. For that reason, Evergreen Spectrum is growing in popularity among clubs investing in winter turf blankets.
Five new TarpMate Air Rollers are making it easier for the stadium’s grounds crew to roll the turf blankets on and off the field. The 75-foot inflatable rollers are lightweight enough to allow as little as two people to both install and remove the turf covers from the field without any additional folding or handling, saving both time and money.
