Austin, TX - Soccer fans in Austin, Texas will have reason to celebrate next spring when the new MLS expansion team joins the league for their inaugural season in 2021.
Currently under construction, the St. David’s Performance Center will serve as the training facility for Austin FC. The 23-acre complex will include four full-size soccer pitches — three natural and one artificial turf — and a 30,000-square-foot indoor facility that will house the Austin FC players, soccer operations, and Academy players.
Once the sod is installed later this year, the grounds crew will have close to 200,000 square feet of Evergreen Premium turf covers at their disposal. The 10 sections of turf blankets were ordered in different sizes, along with 10 TarpMate inflatable air rollers for easier turf cover handling and storage. The facility’s turf manager, Weston Appelfeller, previously with Ohio’s Columbus Crew, was familiar with Evergreen’s benefits and knew it could help bring the Austin field to game-day condition.
Evergreen turf covers mimic a greenhouse effect by retaining natural heat and moisture that speeds up seed germination and promotes deep root development. The turf growth blankets help to accelerate growth and encourage earlier spring green-up, while protecting against adverse growing conditions. Each cover is UV treated, rot and mildew resistant, and stands up to year of regular use.
