Eagan, MN -
A new, state-of-the-art practice facility for the Minnesota Vikings is just months away from opening — exciting times not only for the players, but all of the staff who support the NFL team.
The Twin Cities Orthopedics (TCO) Performance Center, located in Eagan, Minnesota, will also serve as the team’s new headquarters. The 277,000-square-foot venue, which sits on 33 acres, will provide four outdoor practice fields and is scheduled to open in March 2018.
In October, climate-controlled trucks travelled from Graff’s Turf in Fort Morgan, Colorado to the TCO Center with enough Kentucky Bluegrass sod to cover 360,000 square feet of practice fields. Seeded to team specifications over a year ago, the sod is now in place and being protected by Evergreen Premium turf blankets.
Turf covers are ideal for safeguarding new or established turf, and accelerating turf growth. During the winter months, they help to protect against wind, erosion, frost and winter kill, and can produce faster green-up by two to three weeks. What makes the TCO Center’s turf protection unique is its color. Rather than the traditional green lace coating, they opted for orange, which enhances turf growth, due to the quality of light allowed through the blanket. In fact, after previously testing some of the same orange Evergreen in the past, Grant Davisson, Turf Manager for the Vikings, decided that it was the preferred product for his new fields.
Easy to install and remove, Evergreen turf growth blankets shield the grass from adverse factors such as human and wildlife interference and environmental damage, and are ideal for year-round use.
When it comes time to make repairs to the sod, the center’s grounds crew will only have to stroll over to their new 3,200-square-foot nursery where additional sod will be grown. Other features of the impressive facility will include a 6,100-square-foot weight room, an auditorium doubling as the Vikings’ meeting room, cafeteria, indoor practice facility and the TCO Stadium, designed to host high school and community sports. One of its most outstanding features is the height of the indoor field — at 113 feet, it’s high enough for the best kickers to practice field goals.
