Carson, CA - Rain or shine, the game must go on — and so must the field preparation that happens before each game. At the StubHub Center in Carson, California, getting the field ready for Sunday Los Angeles Chargers football after a Saturday LA Galaxy soccer game is a must, despite the weather forecast.
That’s why it made sense for the stadium to invest in a MacLeod Cover from Covermaster, a semi-automated inflatable sports dome that shields the field with a lightweight, semi-translucent protective cover. Eighteen feet high at its tallest point and tapering to a few feet high along the sidelines, the inflatable football field cover allows the grounds crew to cut grass, paint field markings and do minor repairs between games, even in a downpour.
For the next three years, the stadium at the StubHub Center will be hosting both the LA Galaxy soccer team and the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, until the Chargers move to the Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park in 2020. During the playing season, that could leave less than 24 hours between games and no option but to ready the sports field within that small window.
In September, a Covermaster team travelled to California to show the grounds crew how to install and use the inflatable field cover. By allowing in air and light, the sports dome also creates an environment that promotes healthy turf growth and protects natural grass from extreme weather conditions.
Though the inflatable field cover typically comes with five elements — an inflatable tube, sheet covers, a heated fan unit, anchors and a reel system — California’s more moderate climate meant that they wouldn’t need to fill the dome with heated air. Instead, they were able to opt for blowers minus a heater, making the MacLeod Inflatable Field Cover customizable to different venues and environments.
Covermaster is pleased to add StubHub Center and the Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles Chargers to the growing list of NFL, MLS and CFL teams that depend on this revolutionary technology to keep their fields in top condition, regardless of the weather conditions.
