Atlanta, GA -
When Billy Joel stepped on to the stage at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia last spring, few knew what it took to bring that concert, and others like it, to fruition. Behind the scenes, organizers were planning everything down to the most minute detail, including turf protection.
The open-air stadium is home to MLB’s Atlanta Braves, but in late April, Live Nation Entertainment, a global entertainment company, brought the musical legend to Atlanta. That meant transforming the baseball stadium into a temporary concert venue without damaging the natural grass surface.
Live Nation chose Covermaster’s Enkamat FlatbackTM to protect the natural turf from heavy concert equipment. They ordered enough of the turf protection mesh in 3.25- and 15-foot widths, and then cut them into custom-sized pieces. Five-foot-square mats were placed four layers thick under 12 concert towers, and three 17- by 17-inch squares were layered under each of the scaffolding legs to provide a protective cushion. The turf protector can also be used between grass and temporary roadways, allowing safe travel back and forth over the field.
Enkamat FlatbackTM has a tightly interwoven flat upper layer that holds up against the weight of thousands of spectators and concert equipment. Its three-dimensional geomatrix design allows air and rain to pass through to the surface below, helping the turf to stay green and healthy. A similar product, Enkamat PlusTM, is a great option as a turf protection mat for batting practice areas, sidelines and even the entire field.
