Vancouver, BC - It’s been a successful year for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The 2017 season saw the Major League Soccer team move beyond regular games into the playoffs, presenting a challenge to grounds crew who had to keep the natural turf practice fields in peak condition longer into autumn.
Head groundskeeper Gary Bartley knew that Evergreen turf blankets would be an excellent option for the Whitecaps FC National Soccer Development Centre, located on the University of British Columbia campus. After discussing the merits of the turf covers with other MLS groundkeepers, the franchise opted for 205,000 square feet of Evergreen Radiant Turf Covers , along with TarpMate Air Rollers — a revolutionary system that uses an inflatable vinyl tube to quickly and easily install, remove, and store turf growth blankets.
“Although he considered other products, he chose to work with Covermaster, because of our competitive pricing, commitment to customer service, product innovation, and support to the sports turf industry,” said Covermaster regional representative Thomas Bell.
The winter turf protection arrived in early December 2017, enough to cover the team’s two natural turf fields for the winter. Though the play-off run ended earlier than the team had hoped, they will be using the Evergreen as a winter turf blanket.
Evergreen Radiant frost covers use a specialized silver coating to radiate additional heat back into the soil. A 25-percent increase in heat retention makes the turf cover suitable for all climate types, guarding against frost, wind, erosion, and winter kill. And when spring is around the corner, Evergreen’s greenhouse effect means earlier spring green-ups by two to three weeks. With the 2018 season starting in March, the turf covers from Covermaster will help get the practice fields ready for another successful year
