Kópavogur, Iceland - What’s one of the most effective ways to put Evergreen turf covers to the test? Set them up on a natural grass field in Iceland.
Kopavogsvollur is a multi-use stadium in Kopavogur, Iceland, used primarily for soccer matches and track and field events. Though stadium staff were already using a black mesh turf cover from Europe, it was the first time a Covermaster product had made its way to the Nordic country. They decided to give Evergreen Radiant turf covers a try, ordering two sections that would cover 8,700 square feet of grass, along with a pair of custom TarpMate Air inflatable tarp rollers.
Evergreen Radiant has a specialized silver lace coating that radiates additional heat back into the soil and offers an additional 25-percent increase in heat retention. Designed to provide a protective barrier for all types of turf, Evergreen shields the area from adverse growing conditions and provides exceptional winter protection — an important feature in the quickly fluctuating Icelandic climate.
This spring, the stadium installed sections of Evergreen Turf Blankets alongside their original black mesh turf blankets and about a month later, pulled back the covers to check on the turf. The difference in the growth and green-up effect was unbelieveable, said Gerry Hackett, Covermaster Regional Representative. In fact, as Magnús Valur Böðvarsson, Head groundsman of Kópavogsvöllur Stadium stated, “April month was a bit cold so the covers we had did very much for us. There were a few very interesting things about this experiment. We had covers over about 75% of the pitch. Black covers for most of the pitch and the evergreen in the middle. We took the covers off the pitch just after Easter, and to be honest, we were a bit amazed. The grass under our normal covers were fine but the evergreen covers the growth of the grass was truly unbelievable. We had to remove the turf cover and mow the grass because of the growth before we put it back on … like I said before, we were amazed by the growth under the cover, even though the temperature outside wasn´t often higher then 3-60C (37-430F) and was very useful for the pitch.”
Needless to say, staff at Kopavogsvollur are sold on Evergreen Turf Blankets and can attest to its ability to protect against the harshest of conditions. In fact, they would like to add more Turf Blankets for their pitch.
