Sports organizations are getting creative as they find new ways to engage viewers against a backdrop of empty stadiums. At Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, that means using stadium seat covers printed in a specific hue for a green screen effect not unlike the technique found in filmmaking.
During COVID-19, the New York Red Bulls are sharing their stadium with the New York City FC as each team plays home games out of the same facility. In early August, the soccer-specific stadium ordered from Covermaster® five sections of bleacher seat covers printed in chroma key green to create a custom background for each match. The custom seat covers arrived less than two weeks later, allowing the main broadcast camera to use the green screen technology to display red seat covers during Red Bulls games and blue seat covers during New York City FC matches.
But TV viewers may think their eyes are deceiving them as the replay camera brings the green stadium seat covers back into view. The green screen tool not only aids in customizing the stadium, but it also opens up branding opportunities with the ability to broadcast logos or sponsor names.
Though bleacher seat covers have traditionally been used to control spectator seating or reduce maintenance costs by blocking off sections, the custom printed green covers offer an ingenious way to engage fans and bring them back into the game.
